Classic Nightcore is the right starting point for most songs. If the vocal turns harsh before it turns energetic, step back to Light rather than trying to fix it with reverb — harshness here is the pitch shift showing, and reverb will only blur it.
Speed and pitch multiply into one playback rate. The tool displays that number live, so you know a 1.15x + 3 st setting is really playing at 1.37x rather than finding out on export.
Speeding a track up thins it out, because everything moves up and away from the low end. A little bass and a short room put back the weight the shift takes away.
Light through High Pitch span 1.37x to 2.58x combined. They are spaced far enough apart to be genuinely different choices rather than four names for the same edit.
This is varispeed — the samples are read faster, not cut up and re-spaced. No smearing on drums, no artefacts on consonants, at the cost of pitch and tempo being locked together.

Every guide describes nightcore as two operations: speed the song up, and raise the pitch. That is a fair description of the intent, but it is not what is happening underneath. Speeding a recording up already raises the pitch — the two are the same operation viewed from different ends. What defines a nightcore edit is a single quantity: the playback rate.
That has a practical consequence on this page, because the Speed and Pitch controls both feed that one rate and therefore multiply. Setting 1.15x speed and +3 semitones does not give you a track at 1.15x that also happens to be brighter. It gives you a track at 1.37x, which is +5.4 semitones — the two settings compound. Once you think in terms of the single number, the genre’s range is easy to describe. Below about 1.25x combined the edit reads as a slightly quick version of the original. Between roughly 1.35x and 1.6x is where nightcore actually lives — fast and bright, but the vocal still tracks as singing. Past about 1.8x, which is nearly an octave, the voice stops implying a person and starts implying an effect. None of that is a rule, but it explains why edits that sound wrong usually sound wrong in the same way.

Playing a recording faster raises every frequency in it, so speed and pitch are not two effects being layered but one operation described twice. What separates a good nightcore edit from a bad one is not whether you moved both controls, but where the combined rate landed. The extras that help are the ones that compensate for what the speed-up removes: a little bass to replace the weight, and a short room to stop it sounding thin.

Because speeding a track up moves everything upward, including the low end that gave it weight. A kick that sat at 60 Hz is at 90 Hz after a 1.5x edit, which is a different and much less physical sound. That is what the bass control is for — the presets add a few dB precisely to put back what the rate change takes away. A short reverb helps too, by giving the brightened mix somewhere to sit.
Varispeed scales the vocal formants along with the pitch. Formants are resonances set by the physical size of a singer's throat and mouth, and they normally stay put when someone sings higher — so moving them implies a body that changed size, which the ear reads as artificial. It is not distortion and cannot be fixed with reverb or EQ. The only real remedy is a lower combined rate.
Mechanically they are the same operation at different intensities, and the sped-up trend on short-form video is generally milder — often 1.1x to 1.3x combined, where nightcore proper runs faster and brighter.
